Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider, commonly known as J.C.R. or "Lick," was a pioneering American psychologist and computer scientist born on March 11, 1915, in St. Louis, Missouri. His visionary work laid the foundation for modern computing and the Internet.
Licklider's academic journey began at Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned a B.A. with a triple major in physics, mathematics, and psychology in 1937, followed by an M.A. in psychology in 1938. He later received a Ph.D. in psychoacoustics from the University of Rochester in 1942. His early career included research in psychoacoustics at Harvard University, where he also served as a lecturer.
In the 1950s, Licklider's interest shifted towards information technology. At MIT, he became involved in the SAGE project, contributing to the development of human-computer interaction. His 1960 paper, "Man-Computer Symbiosis," outlined the need for simpler interactions between computers and users, envisioning a partnership where computers would handle routine tasks, allowing humans to focus on complex problem-solving. This concept foreshadowed interactive computing and intelligence amplification.
As director of the Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO) at ARPA from 1962 to 1964, Licklider funded pivotal projects like Project MAC at MIT, which developed time-sharing systems enabling multiple users to interact with a single computer simultaneously. He also supported research at Stanford University, UCLA, and UC Berkeley, fostering advancements in time-sharing and application development.
Licklider's 1968 paper, "The Computer as a Communication Device," co-authored with Robert W. Taylor, predicted the use of computer networks to support communities of common interest, allowing collaboration without regard to location. This vision anticipated the social aspects of modern Internet use, including online communities and social media platforms.
His foresight extended to envisioning graphical computing, point-and-click interfaces, digital libraries, e-commerce, and online banking. He also imagined software existing on a network, migrating wherever needed, a concept resembling today's cloud computing.
Licklider's influence persists in contemporary developments. His emphasis on human-computer symbiosis has inspired ongoing research in human-computer interaction (HCI), aiming to create systems that act as collaborators, understanding nuances nearly as adeptly as human partners. This vision is particularly relevant in the context of the Metaverse, where immersive, interactive environments are being developed to enhance user experience.

Endel Tulving
Endel Tulving was born in Estonia in May 26, 1927 a cognitive psychologist and a Canadian scientist.
He moved to Germany when he was 17, then to Canada to attend the University of Toronto. He received his B.A in 1953 and his M.A in 1954. He then went to Harvard University and earned a PhD in experimental psychology in 1957.
When he was appointed to his first teaching post, at the University of Toronto in 1956, he intended to carry on with his studies of visual perception. But there was no budget for the necessary equipment. At the time Tulving knew absolutely nothing about memory, except that the research materials – principally pens and paper – were likely to be extremely cheap.
Tulving’s contribution to Psychology is in suggestion that memory comprises different forms. He developed the encoding specificity principle, that is, the idea that retrieval is better when it occurs in situations that match the conditions under which the memory was encoded.
He was also an early proponent of the idea that long-term memory involves multiple systems. When he introduced the concept of multiple systems, it was roundly criticized: today, it is universally accepted, in one form or another by memory scientist.

Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904-1990)
Perhaps the most recognized behaviorist in the history of the psychological learning theory movement was Burrhus Frederic Skinner. B. F. Skinner was born in northeastern Pennsylvania in 1904. He continued to write and work until his death on August 18, 1990.
Skinner grew up in a strict Presbyterian home, but rejected the Christian faith as a teenager.
Skinner studied English and classics at Hamilton College where he received his AB (1926) in literature. He intending to be a writer but in 1927 after reading Watson and the philosopher Bertrand Russell, Skinner enrolled at Harvard, earning his MA in 1930 and his PhD under E.G. Boring in 1931.
Following teaching stints at the University of Minnesota and Indiana University, Skinner returned to Harvard in 1948 where he finished his career in 1974.
Regarded as a classic, his dissertation reflected his theory that a reflect arc, a then widely debated concept, was nothing more than the relationship between a stimulus and a response. He argued that all behavior in fact could be explained by looking at the stimuli that result in its occurrence.
Skinner is considered by many to the most important figure in 20th century psychology. B.F. Skinner advanced the controversial psychological theories of behaviorism and operant conditioning, which propounded the control of behaviors through consequences particularly positive consequences.
Skinner was committed to a descriptive science of behavior; that is, a non-theoretical science of behavior, something akin more to engineering than to a form of theoretical physics. He was interested in how to build behavior into a system and show to predict and control that behavior.
